Do I Need Medicare Part B at 65 in Utah?

Turning 65 in Utah? Learn when Medicare Part B may be needed, when people sometimes delay it, and what to verify before deciding.

Many people enroll at 65

If you do not have qualifying active employer coverage, enrolling in Part B during your Initial Enrollment Period can help avoid coverage gaps and possible late-enrollment consequences.

Some people working past 65 may delay Part B

If you or your spouse are actively employed and you are covered by that employer health plan, you may be able to delay Part B without a late penalty. Do not assume—verify that your coverage qualifies.

COBRA and retiree coverage are different

COBRA or retiree health coverage does not necessarily protect you from Part B enrollment deadlines in the same way active employer coverage can. Confirm the Medicare rules before relying on either.

Get the dates right before changing coverage

Coordinate the end of employer coverage with the start of Medicare. Confirm effective dates before canceling existing insurance.
